Subject: Notice Of Partial Fire Restriction (Effective Immediately)
To: All Residents, Members, And Visitors Of George Gordon First Nation
Date: May 20, 2026
Due to volatile weather conditions and high winds, there remains a significant risk of dangerous, fast-moving grass fires. To protect our homes, our land, and our people, the George Gordon First Nation Administration is maintaining a strict restriction on uncontained open fires and land clearing across all community lands.
1. WHAT IS BANNED?
The following activities are strictly NOT ALLOWED until further notice:
- Grass Fires: Any intentional lighting or burning of standing grass, fields, or ditches.
- Controlled Burns: No agricultural, brush, or land-clearing burns are allowed, even with a previously issued permit.
- Uncontained Open Burning: Any clearing or open burning of yard waste piles outside of an approved containment structure.
2. WHAT IS ALLOWED?
The following devices and activities are PERMITTED, provided they are closely monitored and managed responsibly:
- Barbecues: Gas, propane, or charcoal barbecues used strictly for cooking purposes.
- Fire Pits: Recreational fire pits and CSA-approved portable propane fire pits.
- Burn Barrels: The use of secure, enclosed burn barrels for disposing of dry garbage or wood.
- Fireworks: The personal discharge and use of fireworks or firecrackers.
3. DAMAGE AND RESPONSIBILITY
This notice serves as a formal warning. Under the authority of GGFN leadership and in accordance with the Saskatchewan Wildfire Act:
Any person who starts an unauthorized grass fire or “controlled burn” that causes damage or loss to George Gordon First Nation properties or resources will be held responsible, to the fullest extent of the law, through any means necessary. This includes being billed for the full cost of firefighting services and facing legal action for any property destroyed.
4. REPORTING FIRES
If you see an out-of-control fire or someone violating the grass burning ban, please act immediately:
- To report a fire, call 1 (639) 909-7044 OR call 1 (306) 835-7898.
- To report a wildfire, call 1-800-667-9660.
- To report an emergency fire, call 9-1-1.
We thank you for your continued cooperation in keeping our community safe. This restriction will stay in place until it is officially lifted by the Band Office.
