The Public Works department at George Gordon First Nation (GGFN) upholds and delivers essential services to the community by maintaining major infrastructure, including roadways, and public spaces. The Heavy Equipment Operator operates a variety of heavy equipment to, maintain roadways, and ensure safe access to properties, while consistently following safety practices. It also includes performing equipment inspections, cleaning, assisting with routine maintenance, tracking inventory, and reporting on activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct daily pre-operational safety checks and maintenance of equipment, including inspecting tires, identifying leaks or loose parts, and testing lights and equipment responsiveness.
- Clean, lubricate, and refill heavy equipment as scheduled or when required, such as cleaning filters, removing dirt buildup, and monitoring fluid levels.
- Maintain adequate inventory of essential parts and supplies (e.g. grader blades, mower blades, air and oil filters).
- Operate heavy equipment, mostly graders but not limited to including skid steers, backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, and dump trucks, to excavate, move, load/unload, and grade earth, rock, gravel, snow or other materials like pallets of supplies.
- Use heavy equipment to haul, distribute, and level gravel on roadways.
- Maintain safe and reliable access to homes, buildings, water sources, and waste sites, especially during winter weather conditions.
- Operate all equipment safely and effectively to prevent injury, property damage, and other hazards.
- Secure and properly store machinery when not in use.
- Assist with or participate in regular routinely scheduled maintenance and prepare equipment for service to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Promptly notify Manager of maintenance needs, unexpected breakdowns, operational irregularities, or safety concerns.
- Monitor surroundings and adhere to all workplace safety practices.
- Document completed checks and maintenance activities, noting any issues for the Manager or mechanics.
- May be needed to assist with maintenance of public spaces like cemetery, pow wow arbor and grounds, and playgrounds.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience in operating heavy equipment is an asset, however willingness to obtain required certification is acceptable.
- Current safety certifications (e.g. H2S, Confined Space, Fall Protection) or a commitment to completing them is required.
- A valid Saskatchewan class five (5) driver’s license is required and a class 1A license is considered an asset.
- Mechanically inclined is considered an advantage.
- Applicants must provide a criminal record check.
Work Conditions:
- Ability to work in all weather conditions including snow and rainstorms.
- Work involves long periods of sitting.
- Capable of safely lifting, pushing, or carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Required to wear high visibility personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety boots, gloves, etc. to ensure the safety of oneself and others.
- Occasional overtime and extended hours may be necessary, particularly during emergencies
Salary will be based on experience, training, and education. The position reports directly to the Public Works Manager.
